PLM work instructions: getting governed engineering data to the workforce

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is the authoritative, governed source of engineering information. It holds the released design data, tracks every revision, controls who can change what, and feeds the other systems that run the business, including ERP and MES. When a question comes up about what the current design actually is, PLM answers it.

What PLM was never designed to do is deliver that information to the person doing the work, whether that is the operator assembling the unit, the technician servicing it in the field, or the new hire learning the process for the first time. Manufacturers invested heavily in CAD to create design data, then invested again in PLM to govern it. Both investments worked. Design engineering now produces more product data, faster, than at any point in the industry's history, and PLM keeps that data controlled and traceable.

The third phase is connecting that data to the people who build and service the product, and this is where most organizations are still working. Frontline workers do not open CAD files and are not licensed for PLM, so what reaches them is an export. The engineering data is current. What arrives at the station is a snapshot of how that data looked on the day someone exported it.

Much of the industry has framed this as a connected worker problem and answered it with devices and dashboards. The harder problem is connected knowledge. A worker with a tablet and no current instruction is in the same position as a worker with a clipboard. What has to travel from engineering to the floor is the knowledge itself, in a form the worker can act on, tied back to the governed source that authorized it.

What the workforce needs from your PLM data

Product data that guides execution has to arrive filtered, contextualized, and specific. A worker building one subassembly needs that subassembly, at the current revision, with the steps that apply to their station and the detail level that matches their experience. Everything beyond that costs time and invites error.

Meeting that standard means the instruction is built from the engineering model rather than recreated alongside it, and stays linked to that model as the design changes.

Authoring from PLM data

Envision Creator is the authoring application. Manufacturing engineers, technical authors, and process planners work directly with 3D CAD models across more than 30 formats, without CAD licenses or CAD expertise. They pull models straight from the PLM system, build exploded views and animations, add annotations and parts tables, and assemble complete instructional documents. Finished work saves back into PLM as managed content, including animations exported as video.

Evie, Canvas Envision's AI, compresses that work further. Evie generates exploded views, isolates and recolors parts, builds parts lists and custom tables, and converts existing PDFs and instructional videos into structured instructions. The author reviews what Evie produces, incorporates the changes, adjusts against their own expertise, and publishes. Evie does the heavy lifting on restructuring while the author stays in control of what ships. What used to take days can now be done in minutes.

Delivering instructions at the point of work

Envision Operator delivers those instructions to the workforce in a browser. Workers rotate and explode 3D models, step through sequences at their own pace, and acknowledge safety-critical steps where a deliberate pause is warranted. New hires get full detail. Experienced workers get what changed.

Delivery runs in both directions. Named Operators capture inspection values, confirm completion, flag an unclear step, and record a non-conformance from inside the instruction itself. That data flows back through the connection to PLM and MES, creating an auditable execution record and giving authors evidence about how their instructions perform in production.

Keeping instructions current as designs change

Envision Connector maintains the governed link between Envision and your systems of record. When engineering releases a change in PLM, that change surfaces in the affected instruction for review. The author sees exactly what moved, incorporates it, and publishes. The updated instruction reaches every worker on their next refresh.

Review is the part that matters. Design changes flowing straight to the production floor without a person validating them trades one risk for another. Governed change management means changes move quickly and still reach the floor only after someone has approved them.

Pre-built Envision Connectors cover Aras Innovator, Autodesk Vault, Rockwell Plex, 42Q, SAIC ReadyOne, SSI, and Infor. Aras is the deepest of these.
